Bring your 3D models to life by integrating electronic engineering! This course builds on students’ prior knowledge of 3D printing, modeling and design. By teaching basic engineering concepts, students will take their skills to the next level and design innovative, multi-part 3D products.

Class Details

  • 8 sessions
  • 1.5 hour class
  • Recommended for students 8 years and up
  • Students must have completed a beginner-level 3D Modeling & Printing course

Course Description

This 1.5 hour course meets once per week and builds on students prior knowledge of 3D design and printing. Students will take on more challenging projects with multi-part assemblies and mobile designs. In a final course capstone project, students will design a battery-operated toy car that integrates electronics, 3D-printed components and a custom-designed hood. This class also features:

  • Individual and team skill-building activities
  • Real-life application of geometry and physics concepts
  • Both kid-friendly and professional grade 3D design software 
  • Hands on, project-based curriculum

Technology Used

  • Software - Tinkercad™  cloud-based Computer Aided Design (CAD) application OR Autodesk® professional-grade software is available for more advanced students
  • Hardware – FDM 3D Printers (on-site), Electronics & Assembly Toolkit

Class Outcomes & Takeaways

  • Students will take home 3 of their own 3D-printed creations such as a fidget spinner, gyro cube or battery-powered car
  • Learn to build circuitry and basic electronic engineering
  • Understand 3D printer functions and capabilities
