Try your hand at one of the fastest-growing STEM fields! Our most popular course, 3D Modeling & Printing combines playful creativity with core geometry concepts. Students will love bringing their designs to life in our 3D Printing lab.

Course Description

This 1.5 hour course meets once per week and introduces young learners to the exciting world of 3D design. Students will master the basics of Computer Aided Design (CAD) as they create, prototype, test and print their own 3D models. Throughout the process, students learn the fundamentals of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) critical for professional 3D manufacturing. By designing and printing progressively more complex models, students explore the capabilities and limitations of FDM 3D printing technology.  This class features:

  • Individual and team skill-building activities
  • Real-life application of geometry and physics concepts
  • Kid-friendly Tinkercad 3D design software 
  • Lessons in Design Thinking methodology
  • A final capstone project that challenges students to design and print their own 3D product

Technology Used

  • Software - TinkerCAD cloud-based Computer Aided Design (CAD) application
  • Hardware – FDM 3D Printers (on-site)

Class Outcomes & Takeaways

  • Students will take home three of their own 3D-printed creations (i.e. a bookmark, keychain or favorite character)
  • Learn and apply key concepts and terms in 3D Modeling & Printing
  • Upon completing this class, students earn a Blaze Explorer Badge and are eligible for our Intermediate Level class. Students are also ready to participate in LabTime sessions to work independently on 3D design projects.
